Sacred Grounds

During Part I of Sacred Grounds, community members gathered to clear vegetation, improve visibility throughout the cemetery, and reconnect people with this historic landscape.

Part II represents the next step: moving from periodic cleanup toward a long-term community preservation plan.

Our goal is not simply to clean the cemetery and walk away. Together, we will begin developing a larger vision for how the Old Quindaro Cemetery should be protected, maintained, accessed, interpreted, and preserved for generations to come.

That vision includes improved fencing and a historically appropriate entrance gate that better identifies and protects the cemetery; improvements to the road leading to the grounds so that visitors, descendants, preservation professionals, and emergency or maintenance vehicles can safely reach the site; continued documentation and preservation of graves and markers; and a long-term maintenance strategy that does not depend on the cemetery becoming overgrown before action is taken.
